A man registered his interest in AI shares this week after confirming that he had read, understood and accepted the possible end of humanity.
The fictional trading app Eventually Rich added a separate extinction checkbox beneath its usual warnings about losing money. Customers could not continue until they acknowledged that, in certain circumstances, there might also be nobody left to complain to.
The change followed Misanthropic’s reported warning to prospective investors about catastrophic AI risks. The warning was about what could happen. The app had helpfully converted this uncertainty into something that could be completed before breakfast.
One customer scrolled straight to the bottom, ticked the box and returned to his toast. He had previously accepted access to his contacts for a torch app. This felt like much the same sort of thing.
The broker stressed that clicking did not mean customers wanted the apocalypse. It merely confirmed that someone had put the possibility in front of them, which was a much tidier achievement to record.
A customer who selected More information received a longer document. He eventually accepted the risk in order to stop reading about it.
The registration finished with a reminder to invest for the long term. The customer saved the confirmation email, just in case there was one.
What actually happened
Reuters reported that an Anthropic IPO prospectus it reviewed warned of potentially catastrophic risks from advanced AI. A risk disclosure is not evidence that catastrophe will happen. The broker and checkbox below are invented.

What we’re calling next
A retail investment platform introduces a separate mandatory acknowledgement explicitly naming AI-caused human extinction or existential catastrophe before customers can register interest in or invest in an AI company offering.
